Jdorama review: Yankee-kun to Megane-chan

Title: Yankee-kun to Megane-chan Also known as: Flunk Punk Rumble Broadcast dates: 4/23/10 - 6/25/10 Number of episodes: 10 Genre: Comedy Cast: Narimiya Hiroki, Naka Riisa, Hongo Kanata, Koyanagi Yu, Kawaguchi Haruna Plot: Shinagawa Daichi (Narimiya) used to be a good student. Now he is a yankee deliquent. He meets Adachi Hana (Naka) and finds out her secret. She used to be a yankee. Adachi takes it upon herself to reform Shinagawa's bad habits. What is good: I love Narimiya's facial expressions! What is bad: Some of the side characters are a little one-dimensional. Letter rating: B

I heard a lot of good things about Yankee-kun to Megane-chan so I decided to give it a try. Thankfully, the series lived up to the rumors. Both Narimiya and Naka performed their roles beautifully. Not only did they handle the comedy bits well, they also had great chemistry together and pulled off the drama aspects too. I was a little disappointed in some of the secondary characters, but they are secondary so it doesn't detract from the series as a whole.

This is a definite must-watch.

Newness is coming

I'm playing around with a variety of new themes. That means you might see a few changes when you refresh the website. I always find choosing new themes to be difficult. There are so many pretty ones out there. But, alas, it is time to get rid of the anime girls and head into winter. Bah, winter. Oh, and I should be finishing Yankee-kun to Megane-chan today or tomorrow. Expect a new review before the week is over! Two reviews in one week? I'm spoiling you guys!

Jmovie review: Space Battleship Yamato

Title: Space Battleship Yamato Release date: 12/1/10 Genre: Space Drama Cast: Kimura Takuya, Kuroki Meisa, Yamazaki Tsutomu Plot: Earth has been destroyed by an alien race called Gamilas. The only hope to save Earth is a radiation reduction device on planet Iskandar. What is good: Surprisingly, Meisa Kuroki's acting is pretty good! What is bad: On the flip side, Takuya Kimura doesn't live up to his potential. Letter rating: C

My husband is a big fan of the original Space Battleship Yamato anime from the mid-70s. I enjoy watching KimuTaku so I figured this would be perfect for the both of us. Since it was our 10th wedding anniversary, this is what we watched as we snuggled close.

Maybe it's because we're so familiar with the original anime that this seemed to fall short. It's not an awful movie, but it definitely seemed to rush things. When the ship arrived at Iskandar, I turned to my husband with a surprised "Already?!" At the same time, my husband missed the noise from the original Wave Motion Cannon. My husband was also uncomfortable with the changes made to Mori Yuki. In the original, she was a rather feminine nurse, though she did get additional responsibilities later in the series. In the movie, she's a brash ace pilot. Quite a huge different, to say the least.

In all, both of us liked the movie. I would probably sit through it a second time. However, hardcore Yamato fans should be careful. This isn't the same old battleship anymore.

Halloween!

I can't believe I haven't posted about Halloween yet! I am sorta almost ready for it. I have the main pieces of my daughter's costume. She's going as Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time. I have agreed to be Marceline the Vampire Queen so we sorta kinda match. Luckily, Marceline mostly wears normal clothes so I just need some vampire fangs and a long wig. Halloween is my favorite holiday. So fess up, what's your costume this year?

Upcoming anniversary

This Friday is my 10th wedding anniversary. (They should give trophies for that!) After a bit of discussion, my husband and I have decided to stick with our normal couples massage as a present. We tend to try out new places so I hope that this will be a good massage. The last one we had, which was Valentine's Day, wasn't very good. Both of us are currently suffering from some stress-related back aches. I'm ready for my muscles to get relaxed again.

Pink!

My weekend was so very tiring. One of the good points of the weekend was my daughter getting pink hair extensions. She absolutely loves pink. Since the extensions were part of a fund-raiser for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, how could we pass it up? Needless to say, she adores them. The extensions are held in with these little metal balls. The stylist threads the normal hair through the ball then puts the extension in with it. Then the ball is squeezed together with a pair of pliers and that holds everything together. It is pretty awesome. The only problem is that the salon we went to only has these for October. I'm trying to find a salon in the area that has the extensions year-round so we can keep up with them. Wish me luck!

Perhaps a new TV?

I'm thinking about getting a new TV for my bedroom. The one we currently have is OK but it takes up a lot of space. I was trying to find some good deals on lcd tvs but I'm not sure I really want one with a screen that large. Our bedroom isn't huge and I'd hate to have a television take up a ton of room. Also, our cat spends most of her time in our bedroom. I don't really want something on an unsteady stand that she can knock over. Of course, the other 'problem' is that we don't actually watch a lot of television in our bedroom. It's mostly used by my daughter when she doesn't want to watch what we are watching downstairs. (In kid-speak, that means she wants to watch another re-run of "Good Luck Charlie" or "Shake It Up" and my husband and I can only stand watching one episode so many times before we have to tell her to turn it off.) And I can't remember the last time that TV set was turned on.

This is why it is so hard for me to make a decision. I see something I want and I like but then I rationalize it and turn it into a big deal. Gah!

New life paths

Before I started teaching Zumba, I had a ton of ideas for new career paths. For awhile, I thought about going back to college for psychology. I even looked at Psychiatric Technician Jobs to see what the job market for it was in my area. Unfortunately, I think I might be a little too old to go back to school for something like that. But that is why I am thankful for Zumba. I love teaching it and there are so many ways I can better myself without having to go to a 4-year school. I'm hoping to build my classes up enough that I'll be able to quit my current full time job and teach Zumba (and some other dance-fitness programs) instead. The lesson? Keep your eyes open. Sometimes what you need isn't what you are looking for.

Updates should not be difficult.

We've been having a problem with our computers at work lately. Well, that's not completely true. We've been having a problem with Trend Micro's updates, which has screwed up a bunch of the computers. There was another update last night. When I came in this morning, I couldn't even use our intranet-based sign-in site. When I opened Outlook, I could open emails but not attachment or links within the emails. It took about a half hour for Trend Micro to finally calm down. I dread the next update.
