When I opened the Tubi app, I was surprised to see a Korean horror movie pop up. I tend to like Korean horror, though some can be too gory for me. So I have high hopes for Death Name.

Sophie (Amy Keum) is a Korean-American woman struggling with her Korean identity. When she transfers to a new college, she meets a group of Korean students willing to help her learn more about her heritage…a heritage her grandmother was unwilling to talk about. but when a mysterious stranger named Jun (Kevin Woo) comes into her life, Sophie learns about the tragedies in her family tree.

To be honest, I’m having a difficult time trying to find the words to explain why I enjoyed this movie. Maybe it’s because it was interesting to see the importance of names in Korean culture. Maybe I sympathized with Sophie as an outcast. Even though I am not Korean or a child of immigrants, I completely understand feeling shunned from social groups. I just know that I wish more Tubi movies were like this.

Rating: Can I join the group for karaoke?
